👀 Can You Handle All of This?

Come and find out

Hey music junkie,

Have you ever been so busy you felt like you were going to burst? Or felt like you were slowly turning into a bee?

Get it?

Dry jokes aside (or is it sweet), I'm grateful for 2 things. One is getting back to hosting events eg. Hadithi Hangout at Santuri Salon. And the second, is hosting two IG Lives in one week.

Yup, you read that right.

Last Wednesday I interviewed the soulful Cheruu who shared the intimate background stories behind her Soul EP. And performed ALL the songs for us. Some even more than once!

And then this Tuesday, I interviewed another female Kenyan artist. This time, we talked about Zalali's hypnotic track “Iro ma mwoch” produced by Kenyan musician M.Rumbi. Who is performing his brand new EP live this Saturday!

Despite internet issues, both innerviews were so much fun. As always. We felt, we laughed, and we even cried too. Tears of joy that is 🙂

If you missed it, catch the fun replay here.

As we inch closer towards the end of August, the events just keep on increasing. You'll definitely be spoilt for choice this weekend. But don't worry, I picked some must-attends for you.

But first, a little throwback for you.

ARTICLE OF THE WEEK

Blooms in The Dark

Do you remember Blooms in The Dark? The Kenyan play based on a Kenyan podcast by Creatives Garage about queer stories?

Well it was so revolutionary I just had to document it! Through the talented cast, we not only witnessed the hardships of being queer in Kenya but also basked in their black boy joy. And it was so refreshing to see queer relationships reflected in all the fun rainbow colours, and not just black and white.

EVENTS OF THE WEEK

Art for Freedom Storytelling workshop

Are you a storyteller at heart? Or would you like to tell better stories through your art? Then this free Friday workshop is for you.

Kenyan storyteller (and stand up comedian) Kinuthia SK will lead this engaging session inspired by the works of politically conscious Kikuyu musician Joseph Kamaru. Meaning we will discuss how to create art free from government censorship - like Blooms in The Dark did. And discover interesting insights from KMRU about his own grandfather!

TCHNO Takeover at The Mist

Guess what, our favourite techno event is back with a special edition. This Friday, German techno DJ/producers Gebrüder Teichmann will be taking over the Mist!

These Berlin brothers who are in town will bring their unique techno sound straight to our Nairobi ears. Before that, expect an engaging panel discussion followed by an enthralling live production set. And then we dance till the AM!

M.Rumbi's Live EP listening session

After hosting Zalali on IG Live, I'm pretty excited for her performance with Rumbi this Saturday. And here's why you should too.

This is going to be the Kenyan music producer/ instrumentalist’s homecoming gig since coming back from South Africa. And he'll be joined on stage by Kenyan R&B stars N’jiru, Matt Ngesa and DJ Selo on the decks. Come listen to his brand new EP as well as live renditions of his most iconic songs at Moov Cafe.

These events are only the tip of the iceberg. If you want confusion, check out the full events guide on Telegram. Don't say I didn't warn you 😏

And a massive thank you if you contributed to the Mathare kids fundraiser. If you haven't, we have a few days left before they travel for the dance competition in Eldoret. Support them here with what you can.

Until next time,
Stay high on music
