Do you know who this is?
Mimi ni Mganga Mkuu 🎶

Hey music junkie,
How are you feeling? Like really? Last weekend was all kinds of healing, and here's why.
From Monday to Wednesday, I attended a beginners meditation course at Brahma Kumaris Centre. That's the place opposite Alchemist with the giant white lotus flower. Have you seen it?
More than just meditation, it was about learning mystical truths about life. Truths that made us ask important questions, think deeply, before blowing our minds. Here are some major takeaways:
Who am I? I am a human + being (physical body + eternal soul)
Where do we come from? The Supreme Soul
Is God a he or she? God is genderless, but can be a mother or father depending on who you need 💁
And on the last day, we experienced Raja Yoga aka union of the Soul and the Supreme Soul. And no, it wasn't exercise like other types yoga. Instead, we did an open eye meditation where we focused on a point of light (the soul) and imagined connecting with the bigger light (God).
Powerful stuff I tell you.
After this, I caught half of Koko Koseso’s well-attended show at Ankole Grill Kilimani. In between her set, she shared the story of her miracle baby Aza who was born through cryptic birth and has Amniotic Band Syndrome. Look them up. And talk about edutainment!
On Thursday, I missed Dvbliew’s Zahabu Sundowner set so I caught the opening of Anthony Muisyo’s solo exhibition at Munyu Space. Dubbed Posta, it explored how everyday posters, signs and sounds in the CBD can be art. And how Kenyan fundis are also artists/ wagangas/ wajanjas.
After inspiring conversations, we ended the Misty night dancing to reggae at The Clearing - which is celebrating one year this week!
Friday was resting day. And on Saturday, I travelled to Fiesta Farm near Kajiado county for a wellness event. We experienced a gentle sound healing journey led by Narissa aka child of the earth. Unlike at Kisima Festival, it was a smaller group and we lay down outside on the green grass The different instruments definitely raised my vibration and helped me release a lot of emotional baggage.

Always remember to
In the evening, I caught Mia Nane’s fun freestyle session which they recorded at Santuri’s classroom. Then attended the much anticipated TCHNOversary at KODA Nairobi. Room 1 was booming with tech house thanks to Eric K, SHI and Cin.dyke, while Red Riot Room 2 was raving with die-hard techno fans.
RHEINA had the time of her life behind the decks, and so did we. Budalagi and Rathod also brought the house down. And I realized mark timing is not the only way to dance to electronic music. You can be fluid and let the music move you like water. So I let loose, felt free, and healed through the bass and beats ✨
If you missed any of these, worry not - I got Interesting events for you this week. And guess what, I'll be deejaying in one and emceeing in another.
But first, a short and sweet playlist to lift your spirits today.
PLAYLIST OF THE WEEK
The Best of Makadem
Do you know who Mganga Mkuu is? With a career spanning over 20 years, touring olova the world with his own Afrofusion sounds, he's a true music legend.
For this playlist, I picked 11 of his best songs - an epic journey from benga beats (benga + Afrobeat) to Nyatititronik (nyatiti + electronic music). And in case you're wondering why it's on YouTube and not on Spotify, there are multiple reasons why we broke up 😁
EVENTS OF THE WEEK
The Clearing one year anniversary at The Mist
We read deep poetry, listen to eclectic music, and feel like a family even though we just met. That's the magic of The Clearing curated by Bizi Bingi every Thursday night. And this week we're turning one!
As we reflect on sweet sweet memories leaving the Mist at 2AM, I'll play a late night closing set after the magic hour with Moige. Expect soulful African tunes to soothe your soul after a long week.
Geng Geng at The Mist
This Friday, our favourite Kenyan party is back! Geng Geng masters SnSe and Karrl always bring the heat with KE bangers and throwbacks. And this time we'll not only have DJ sets but also live performances by hiphoper Brainchild and dancehall-gengetone duo arif.
And just in case you've never been, Geng Geng is the kind of party that will make you whine your waist on the dancefloor. Or hold somebody by the waist as you dirty dance together 😏
Makadem's Easter Beer & Cheer Concert at The Beer District
After warming up with the Best of Makadem playlist, now you're ready for his epic show this Saturday. Mganga Mkuu is bringing the full Nyatiti Jazz Experience to The Beer District, proving why he's a world class performer. Expect an ecstatic fusion of nyatiti, jazz and benga - basically music to make you stand up and dance!
As the MC of the event, we'll also talk about his 100-day health challenge of no sugar no carbs and no alcohol (yes!). And he’ll share insights on how he's managed to stay so disciplined, almost reaching the finish line 🙆🏾♀️
I don't know if you can tell, but I'm super excited for this weekend. And it's not even the Easter spirit. If you're feeling weuwe (as Makadem would say) then wear your comfy shoes and see you on the dancefloor 💃🏾
Until next time
Stay high on music
