This is how to end your month right!

With these 2 cool underground events

Hey music junkie,

How are you holding up? Are you collecting all this free rainwater for a (non) rainy day? Or all you letting it all go down the blocked drain? 😁

Wet matters aside, it was a pleasure seeing some of you last Saturday at World Record Store Day. Which only happens once a year btw. In case you missed it, here are some highlights…

  • Watching Fadhilee Itulya and a Luhya band performing live (separately)

  • Listening to vinyl DJ sets by DJ Shock, [M] and Nywele Ndengu (who was also the MC)

  • Crate digging for unique vintage records from all over the world

Even though the infamous rain poured all evening long, nobody could stop the party. Which was the biggest one since The Real Vinyl Guru started it 5 years ago. Almost every cool kid in Nairobi was there.

Thanks to this 4/20 event, now we know where Jimmy's Store is. And we can go back anytime to discover more timeless records, listen to them and even take them home. While rocking a new hairdo because Kenyatta Market 😉

Now that it’s almost end month, expect plenty more events your way. But to make life easier for you, here are 2 underground events in Nairobi you should definitely look out for. Because they're hosted by music junkies like you!

EVENT OF THE WEEK

TCHNO Takeover At The Mist

When was the last time you attended a techno party? For me it was early this year. I remember thinking - wow, techno is really healing.

[MONRHEA] is the one who made me realize this through their event series TCHNO. After a 2-year hiatus, TCHNO is back at The Mist to give us an opportunity to experience this deep dark sound in an intimate community setting.

More than just a party, we'll experience a panel discussion about the past, present and future of techno music in Kenya, a live production set and bumping DJ sets till late. The cool thing about TCHNO is you don't have to stand up and dance all night long. You can choose to sit down with friends and listen, or create a piece of art based on how the music makes you feel.

And unlike most techno events in Nairobi, this one is absolutely free! And it's going to be like that forever. So come join the movement!

EVENT OF THE WEEK

NUMB3RS the play

What comes to your mind when you think of numbers? Women form the statistics, men contribute the statistics. At least when it comes to gender based violence, right?

NUMB3RS is a two-character play about the effects of gender based violence on women and children. Inspired by the endless femicides that rocked the country early this year, Esther Kamba and Joseph Obel have created a thought provoking play which encourages anyone facing violence to choose to live, by choosing to leave.

Speaking of, this dynamic duo have produced some of the best plays I have ever watched, from the award-winning two-hander play ECHOES to the one-man show My Body Betrays Me Again. So you already know NUMB3RS will be another stage hit that will make you feel and think deeply.

I'll be attending the Saturday show at Creatives Garage, how about you?

That’s it for now. Two underground events to entertain you this end-month. Because they're both happening at The Mall basement.

Hope to see you in one of them 🙂

Until next time,
Stay high on music
