We are the ancestors 😎

What kind are you?

Hey music junkie,

Have you ever seen so many female-centred events in one week? Neither have I. I guess this Women's Month is quite serious.

Last week however, I started my events with a male centred event. M Rumbi (know him?) invited me to the listening party of Clark Keeng’s new EP. So I did my homework before attending the Thursday gig.

When I arrived at Alloy Bar & Lounge, I thought I was in Dubai. Because this venue is extravagantly grand, with the fanciest lights and decor I have ever seen. It even has a cigar and and a wine lounge inside guys.

Anyway, I'm grateful I got to discover Clark Keeng's real name (hint: he's Luhya) and hear him live for the first time alongside Zawadi and Zalali. Also, I still don't know how to described their music. Is it soul, R&B, jazz or all the above? Let's find out on the next episode of…

The fancy Alloy Lounge

On Friday night, I made my DJ debut at Kenyan Reggae Night as the first and only selectress. And the love I received was real. It was a faya night full of irie tunes that made us dance till the AM.

On Saturday, I played Zahabu Sundowner at The Mall rooftop. This was a more chill set of TaaRnB aka Taarab + RnB music. You will definitely hear me talk about this fun fusion more and more.

And to crown International Women's Day, my male friends and I attended Femme Frequencies at Shelter Ke. Which had an all-female techno DJ lineup, from Uganda's Anitraxx to Kenya’s Merab. Let me tell you, they went in hard!

But the femme weekend was not over yet. There was one more sherehe to go. And that is none other than Koko Koseso’s album launch at The Alchemist.

Even though it rained all night long, we danced to benga, sang in Dholuo, and danced some more. And Koko entertained us in all ways, from her honest storytelling to her powerful singing to her waist whining. In short, she was shining

Watching her shine bright like a diamond, I felt so inspired. And then it hit me why I do what I do. It’s to put you on amazing African artists such as Koko.

Now that we can finally relax a bit, here are some interesting opportunities for you to explore…

EVENTS OF THE WEEK

Tapok, from Reunion island to Nairobi, at Alliance Francaise

Have you ever experienced Maloya music? In case you're wondering what is that, it's music from Mauritius and Reunion islands. And you have a unique chance of experiencing it this Wednesday.

Tapok, a band from Reunion will bring their ecstatic island vibes to Nairobi for probably one night only. If you want to experience something new and interesting this month, meet them at Alliance 💃🏾

Unganisha, Muhamago and SnSe at The Mist

This Saturday, we're back at the underground station for another experimental night. In case you haven't met them, Unganisha is a Kenyan-Norwegian music duo made up of folk star Labdi and tech genius Bernt. Fun fact: they are also part of the groundbreaking out-of-this-world Mizizi Ensemble.

Supporting them is Muhamago from Mozambique, also a unique DJ who you probably also saw at Kilele Summit. And of course our local legend SnSe whose DJ set for Keep Hush almost broke the internet, hehe😏
